There really is no such thing as a typical restoration since every car has its own history. We use the term "body-off restoration" to describe a common set of steps.
When a client arrives they will meet with Aaron and Erik Chovanetz. They will put together a team that will work on the project from beginning to end. The first thing that would be done is evaluating the car for signs of wear and tear or serious damage. During that time research and development begins to determine what items are readily available and what kind of materials will be required.
After the original inspection the car will be disassembled and further notes are made as to the condition of the car. Our technician will remove the engine, drive train, wiring harness, dash gauges and interior trim pieces. The upholstery will be removed along with carpet, door panels and any other pieces that would need reupholstering. The technician will remove all exterior chrome pieces including head lights, grille, bumpers, etc. for repair and re-chroming.
The body can now be removed from the chassis. It will be worked on by a fabricator for necessary work including panel beating, panel replacement and other metal repairs. The chassis will be stripped and repaired where needed and repainted in the body shop. If the car has any wooden substructure it will be repaired at the same time. The body will go to the body shop where all the body panels are finished before the paint work.
Also during this time details like windshield wiper motors to transmission and engine work is performed. The upholsterer will be recovering seats and removable interior pieces or creating custom luggage.
After the body, door panels, trunk and hood have been painted the project is almost at completion. The body and pieces are reinstalled on the rolling chassis. The inside is upholstered and the carpets, seats, door panels etc. are installed. The interior and exterior chrome trim pieces are installed. Everything must fit together with perfection and everything must operate correctly.
Finally with the Clients permission the vehicle is driven to find and fix and squeaks, leaks, rattles or other problems. Then the restored car is delivered to its Owner.
